Welcome to The Hideout

The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch is an all-inclusive upscale working cattle, riding, fly-fishing and adventure guest ranch in Shell, WY (east of Cody and Yellowstone National Park). In addition to riding, working cattle and fly-fishing, we offer an array of non-riding activities and adventures such as trapshooting, archery, canoeing, hiking, biking, 4x4 tours, etc.

Limited to approximately 25 guests per week from all over the world and with access to 85 horses, a 1:1 staff / guest ratio and the owners and management actively involved with the well-being of our guests, we are committed to the highest standards of culinary experience, lodging, staff (we speak 4 languages), horses and personal, almost customized attention. We are very multi-cultural and diverse.

Every year The Hideout books long before the start of the season, mostly because of word of mouth and returning guests. As we do not plan to increase the number of guests per week please book your vacation long ahead of the season.

Authentic Horsemanship – Clinics and Training at The Hideout Ranch

Why AH Horsemanship?

AH Horsemanship ClinicThe concept of AH was formed after repeatedly witnessing the results of inadequate horsemanship. After carefully observing missteps in others’ training that led to the impairment of potentially excellent horses and equestrian experiences, the AH brand was developed as a way to create horses and riders through training methods that replace these errors with being truthful, honest and authentic with both horse and rider.

The AH brand has one simple goal: to make a positive, successful experience for both horse and rider. The AH concept is about respecting and taking care of horses by learning how to be a capable and honest leader of your horse – not projecting unnatural human feelings onto the horse. We believe in doing extensive positive, dedicated and professional groundwork in the round pen and arena prior to riding the horse.

If your definition of Natural Horsemanship is common sense, respectful, safe and professional horsemanship you will find our AH Horsemanship concept very appealing.  We organize horsemanship clinics on a regular basis at The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch. During these clinics we do not forget that horse and rider have a limited attention span. For this reason we offer during our horse clinics and trainings plenty of opportunities to ride in our beautiful Big Horn Mountain area in Wyoming, work cattle and even participate in cattle work on the ranch.

Authentic Horsemanship (as we define it)

Horses, like most animals, are authentic in nature and are devoted to survival. They rarely have any intentions other than the drive to be truthful to their origins. As a herd animal, they are committed to their herd and depend on them in order to survive. We believe that, the more we observe herd behavior, the better we will be able to understand how to harness horses’ potential to be great partners for their human counterparts.

At AH Horsemanship, we believe that whoever works and trains with our horses and riders needs to have the 3 C’s of Character, Conduct and Competence. One cannot train for Character or Conduct, but one can train for Competence. The more Competence one has, the more Character and Conduct it takes to use the Competence in a positive, responsible manner.

The Mustang Heritage Foundation

AH Horsemanship and The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch are active supporters of The Mustang Heritage Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public, charitable, nonprofit organization dedicated to facilitating successful adoptions for America’s excess mustangs and burro’s. Founded in 2001, its mission is to help promote the Bureau of Land Management’s National Wild Horse Program and increase the number of successful adoptions.

Our trainers have participated in Extreme Mustang Makeover Programs and we always have several well trained and smooth riding Mustangs for sale.

The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch uses many AH trained Mustangs in their riding program for trail, cattle and arena work. Riders praise the smoothness, willingness and reliability of these little horses that are all symbols of the American West.

Mustangs probably represent most of what our Authentic Horsemanship culture is all about because they are authentic and given the opportunity to be trained by the right trainers with a 3 C philosophy of Character, Conduct and Competence they make great affordable equestrian companions.

It is generally accepted that anybody who can successfully train a wild mustang or burro using respectful training methods can pretty much train any domesticated horse with low stress methods.
