Our area offers some of the best trout fly fishing in Wyoming. You can cast for native cutthroat, rainbow, brook, and brown trout.
When it comes to fly-fishing and fishing opportunities, the diversity of experiences in this area matches the diversity of the scenery.
The Hideout & Shell Creek riverfront and stock ponds
Located on the ranch property directly, you can fish Shell Creek and some of our stocked ponds. Shell Creek is located below The Hideout and is pristine as most of its water has not been diverted into irrigation canals and it is not affected by water and mud run-off from nearby fields.
The Trapper Creek and Trapper Creek Canyon
Drive 2.5 miles to the Trapper Creek Ranch property and you can fish pristine and untouched Trapper Creek. Trapper Creek comes straight from the mountains through Trapper Canyon and the Trapper Canyon Wilderness Area. Trapper Ranch is the first private property that the Creek runs through.
The Big Horn National Forest & Cloud Peak Wilderness lakes and streams
One can fish Shell Creek, mountain lakes and mountain streams in the Big Horn National Forest and Wilderness Area all within a 30 minute drive from The Hideout. Many places are accessible only by 4x4 and some are more challenging, reachable only by hiking or on horseback. Needless to say, there are plenty of snow run-offs to keep the lakes and streams filled with crystal clear water. No matter where you choose to cast your rod, one thing is for sure, you won’t be fighting for a space on any of the secluded streams or lakes.
Bighorn River - Wyoming
Between Thermopolis and the Bighorn Lake, a dozen species of game fish call the Bighorn River home. Rainbow and brown trout can be found north and south of Thermopolis, while walleye, sauger, ling, shovel nose sturgeon, and channel catfish are found closer to Bighorn Lake. There are several scenic access points along the river.
The Big Horn Lake and Yellowtail Dam
This dam and lake, known forits dramatic high cliffs, stretches 70 miles and runs through Wyoming and Montana. In addition to trout, the lake offers an abundant diversity of fish species.
Whether you choose to fish from a boat or from the shoreline, the Bighorn Lake provides ample opportunities to catch numerous species of fish and all while being surrounded by some of the most beautiful outdoor scenery in the northwest United States. Brown trout, rainbow trout, lake trout, walleye, sauger, smallmouth bass, black crappie, yellow perch, channel catfish, or the even the more exotic ling (burbot) or shovel nose sturgeon are among the fish that may be caught in these waters.
Cody and Yellowstone National Park area
Our professional guides can take you distance to fish the Buffalo Bill Reservoir west of Cody, or Yellowstone Lake and the streams which feed it, both within a comfortable driving distance. Other fishing venues include the North Fork and South Fork of the Shoshone and the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone. Guided fly fishing and float trips are available for both areas. The average trout length is 13 to 15 inches and there are many larger fish just waiting to be caught. Newton Lake is just outside of Cody, Wyoming, and Luce Lake, a 125- acre lake at the mouth of Clarks Fork Canyon, are also used for float tube fishing and walk/wades.
