It’s time to go on your ranch vacation! But if you’ve never gone on a ranch vacation to Wyoming before, the question on your mind might be: “What on earth do I pack for a trip to Cowboy Country?”

First things first, you don’t need to arrive at your Wyoming ranch dressed like you’ve stepped off the set of a Spaghetti Western, unless you want to embrace full cowboy chic (tassels, Stetson and all!). Of course it’s totally up to you, why not go wild in the Wild West!

Boutique, luxury Wyoming ranch, The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch recommends that what you do need are practical, comfortable and stylish clothes for your ranch vacation, that work both in the saddle and around the ranch, and for if you decide to take any off-ranch tours.

Even if you’re an advanced rider and have been on many horse riding vacations around the world, it’s worth taking a look at this ‘what to pack for your Wyoming ranch vacation’ list, as the Wyoming weather can be famously unpredictable and your days at your guest ranch might range from warm, sunny trail rides to cool and breezy mountain evenings. A little preparation goes a long way!

First time on a ranch vacation? My ultimate guide to what to pack for a Wyoming ranch vacation will walk you through exactly what to pack for a horse riding holiday and will have you totally covered, from the moment you step through the ranch gates, to your first ride, down to your last sunset cocktail.

A Wyoming ranch vacation to luxury, boutique, small-scale horse riding ranches like The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch are active, outdoor fun, exploring the endless trails under the big sky.

Starting from the top and working down:

Horse riding helmet

If you have your own riding hat or helmet, bring it, even though it’s a large item to pack. You’ll be much more comfortable in your own! Some horseback riding ranches like The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch can provide helmets if needed. If you prefer a wide-brimmed hat or Stetson for the authentic cowboy look, remember, while stylish, it won’t protect you like a helmet will in the event of a fall (but I get it, they look so good in the photos!). Some guest ranches insist on ‘proper’ riding hats and helmets for safety, so do check first.

Hat for sun protection

A ball cap or wide-brimmed hat are a must for off-horse adventures around the ranch or on an off-ranch tour. At high altitudes like in Wyoming’s wilderness, sun protection isn’t an option, it’s a must. No-one wants sunstroke on their adventure vacation!

Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm

Again, even on cloudy days in Wyoming, high-altitude UV rays are strong. Apply a good water-resistant/waterproof SPF on all exposed areas at the beginning of the day while getting ready for your adventures, then reapply regularly throughout the day. And don’t forget SPF lip balm, too – chapped lips are no fun!

Lightweight long-sleeved shirts

Wyoming’s high-altitude sun can be intense, so wearing protective clothing along with your SPF will ensure your comfort throughout the long days in the saddle. Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts can also protect your arms from insect bites and scratches if riding through dense thickets. Pack breathable, moisture-wicking shirts you can layer; a fun, checked cowgirl/boy-style button-down shirt (Rhinestones optional!) over a performance tee or tank/vest top works perfectly.

Rain gear

Weather changes quickly in the Bighorn Mountains near The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch, and a pack-down, lightweight waterproof jacket will be your best friend when a surprise shower rolls in.

Warm top layer

Mornings in Wyoming can be cool, afternoons warm. Bring a cozy fleece or sweater that you can remove when the sun comes out. This will also be a great layer for throwing on if you’re enjoying an evening al fresco, cocktail in hand or round the campfire.

Riding gloves

Protect your hands from the reins and the elements with lightweight gloves with grips, specially designed for horseback riding.

Seat- or saddle-saver

If you’re not used to spending hours in the saddle, a seat-saver can make a big difference to your comfort. Numb behinds are quite miserable, and these handy items are a game-changer for your comfort and enjoyment.

Riding jeans or pants

Look for comfy, stretchy denim, or riding-specific pants like jodhpurs. You can choose a boot-cut trouser fit to wear over your footwear, or a more tight-fitting leg that will tuck into longer boots. Avoid riding pants with bulky inner seams, as these can rub uncomfortably during long rides and a little stretch in the fabric will keep you moving freely.

Riding boots

Skip the shiny new boots for your first ride, they’ll give you blisters faster than you can say ‘giddy-up’! Instead, choose well worn-in closed-toe riding boots with a small heel. Wear, walk eat, sleep (just kidding, but you get the picture) and ride in them before going on your ranch vacation so it’s like popping on a pair of old friends. And no sneakers on horseback! That necessary little boot heel is designed to make sure your foot doesn’t slip through the stirrup.

Reusable water bottle

Hydration is essential, especially on long rides. At The Hideout, you’ll be provided with a pommel bag and two water bottles that can be found in your cabin fridge, filled with fresh, cold water ready to go. Check your ranch can supply pommel or saddlebags, as you’ll more than likely want an easily-reachable place to put your phone for pics and videos, and sunglasses, too.

Non-riding clothes to pack for your ranch vacation

Your days at The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch won’t be all riding. This Wyoming ranch offers a mix of adventure, relaxation and rustic luxury, with plenty of non-horseback riding activities to enjoy around your days on the trails.

Here’s what to pack for a Wyoming ranch vacation for when you’re not on the back of a horse!

Casual lodge wear

Bring comfortable clothes like yoga pants, shorts or loose trousers for relaxing in, when you’re curled up with a book, or enjoying the views from your porch.

Dinner and cocktail hour outfits

The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch’s dress code is relaxed and informal, but some guests still enjoy dressing up slightly for cocktail hour and dinner. Think smart casual, like jeans and some fashionable cowboy boots, or long skirt, but definitely not formal – you can leave the dinner jackets and glam heels at home!

Swimwear

The Hideout is a ranch with a swimming pool and a dip after a long, dusty day’s ride is the perfect way to unwind, so don’t forget those bathers!

Lightweight layers

Lightweight jackets, cardigans, scarves, or wraps are great for throwing on when you spend cool evenings outdoors.

Comfortable walking shoes, boots or sneakers

You’ll need these for exploring the ranch property, going into town for the rodeo, joining a guided hike, mountain biking or participating in any of the many other non-horseback riding activities available.
