Welcome to The Hideout

The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch is an all-inclusive upscale working cattle, riding, fly-fishing and adventure guest ranch in Shell, WY (east of Cody and Yellowstone National Park). In addition to riding, working cattle and fly-fishing, we offer an array of non-riding activities and adventures such as trapshooting, archery, canoeing, hiking, biking, 4x4 tours, etc.

Limited to approximately 25 guests per week from all over the world and with access to 85 horses, a 1:1 staff / guest ratio and the owners and management actively involved with the well-being of our guests, we are committed to the highest standards of culinary experience, lodging, staff (we speak 4 languages), horses and personal, almost customized attention. We are very multi-cultural and diverse.

Every year The Hideout books long before the start of the season, mostly because of word of mouth and returning guests. As we do not plan to increase the number of guests per week please book your vacation long ahead of the season.

We encourage our guests flying from Billings to rent vehicles so they have the freedom to enjoy other recreational and historical attractions in the region.
We recommend guests who book for 2 weeks at a time and are at The Hideout over the week-end, to rent a vehicle if they wish to visit the area or make trips over the week-end to visit places like Yellowstone National Park, Cody, etc.

Rentals are available through the car rental companies at The Cody and Billings Airport. The Hideout can arrange for a shuttle service to and from The Hideout. For insurance reasons The Hideout cannot provide vehicles to 3rd parties.

Forest Service & BLM Generated Revenue & Fees

While most of the time during your stay at The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch you will be enjoying our private property and lands. However, because over 50% of the property in the state of Wyoming is federal land, as in most western states, you will also spend time on federal land for some of the activities. The grazing of livestock on federal land is regulated under grazing leases. The recreational use of federal land is regulated under special recreational leases. The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch has recreational leases with the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and The National Forest (The Big Horn National Forest and Cloud Peak Wilderness).

Most of our mountain and all-day rides we offer during the summer are on National Forest Land. Our half-day rides here in the basin and the land we use throughout the year are BLM land or private property.

Approximately 5 to 10% of your total Guest Ranch Package Income is generated on public lands. This may vary from year to year, depending on the number of guests, access to more trails, riding on our own and other owners’ private property and guest preference in terms of activities.

These percentages are taken from the total hours of your stay at The Hideout from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave. Our Recreational Lease Fee, which is a tax to the government, is calculated on a percentage of the revenue on activities we generate on public lands. Lodging, meals or any activities that take place on private property are not subject to this tax. They may be subject to other taxes.
